Torrey Kids!

What is "Torrey Kids"?

Well, in the past few months we have been praying about a new "Intergenerational Sunday School" (IGSS) to reach the next generation for Christ. Torrey Pines Christian Church has a dream to "build a bridge" to the next generation! I am honored to be a small part of that dream! It is humbling and very exciting. Since kids are in school five days out of the week - we have decided to change the name "Intergenerational Sunday School" to just "Torrey Kids." It’s fun, it’s short and it’s new!

Beginning June 1st at 9:00 a.m. we are going to try a new venue for our Torrey Kids. We are going to turn Hashinger Hall into a "great room" of truth-learning and fun for our kids. Our kick-off curriculum is going to be studying the 10 Commandments. We will have worship, biblical teaching with both storytellers and video, some hands-on activities and small group discussions with the kids divided by age/grade.

The original plan was to have a rotational curriculum that moved kids from room to room, having them experience the chosen curriculum using the mediums of art, drama, storytelling, computers, recreation, cooking, science and video. Because of space limitations we were going to start with just four rooms. We ran into a snag when we found a fire code regulation that states that 1st and 2nd graders cannot be on the second floor of a building without a designated fire escape staircase. So... we decided to move all the rotations into Hashinger Hall and adjust those different modalities over the course of the summer. It’s going to be great!

Some of you have already signed up to be a part of this exciting new adventure. You either pledged by writing your name on the back of a puzzle piece at the Congregational Meeting last November - or you signed up on the IGSS flyer that was in the bulletin for many weeks. For those of you ready to roll up your sleeves and help - thank you! For those of you who would like to join us now - just let me know! You can e-mail me: NancyBurgess@torreypineschurch.com or pick up a Torrey Kids info packet from the front desk that gives all the new job descriptions with a sign-up card for your favorites. We want you to serve in your "sweet spot" and more importantly - our kids need YOU! We want many generations to join in loving, teaching, hugging and mentoring the next generation. If you don’t see me on Sunday morning and want to turn in your "Count me in!" card... just pop by my office on the first floor of the Administration Building. I have a mail slot in my door which will have a sign that says "Torrey Kids Team." Just slip it in there - and I’ll be sure to get it.

I am blessed to be a part of a team that will change the world by investing in the lives of our children! Thank you in advance for what you are going to do for our "Torrey Kids!"
